Like oxides and nitrides, Silicon Carbide (SiC) is a very hard wearing material, again requiring diamond-grinding methods to process once fired.
Although not exclusively, carbides are used mainly for applications in which physical wear is a major consideration. They are amongst the hardest materials available.
Silicon carbide powder has been mass-produced since the late nineteenth century for use as an abrasive. Grains of silicon carbide can be bonded together by sintering to form very hard ceramics which are widely used in applications requiring high endurance such as car braking systems.
Electronic applications of silicon carbide as LED's have been used for many years and nowadays SiC is widely used in high-temperature/high-voltage semiconductor electronics. |
